“The Europeans advent into heavier than air machines was made possible thanks to a charming Brazilian inventor named Alberto Santos-Dumont. He built a box-kite airplane where each wing was a box kite, and a third box-kite was suspended ahead of the aircraft to provide control. He flew it for eight seconds in the first motor powered heavier than air flight in Europe. The box-kite construction made it light weight - about half that of the Wright brothers' biplane!”
