Set TIME to "10:00"

"Thank you Professor Miller! I'm Professor Calfior and it's time to find out what the local airport information is before we begin to taxi. It's called Automatic Terminal Information Service or ATIS for short, so go ahead and dial in the frequency 128.8 on our communication panel. "

Instruments:

1) Tune COM to "128.8" (ATIS)

"RIVERSIDE MUNICIPAL, INFORMATION DELTA, 1645 ZULU WEATHER, SKY CLEAR, VISIBILITY 6, HAZE. TEMPERATURE 87, WIND 090 AT 10. ALTIMETER 30.01. LANDING AND DEPARTING RUNWAY 9. ADVISE ON INITIAL CONTACT YOU HAVE INFORMATION DELTA."

"All right! Winds are from the east, that's why runway 9 is the active runway. Let's go ahead and set up the instruments as we know we'll need them."

2) Set "Altimeter" and "DG"

3) Set XPDR to "1200" (VFR code)

4) Tune NAV 1 to "112.2" (PDZ)

5) Set NAV 1 OBS to "282" in the upper window

6) Tune NAV 2 to "110.4" (POM)

7) Set NAV 2 OBS to "344" in the upper window

8) Set the DME to "NAV 1" and "DIST"

9) Check CARB HEAT is "OFF"

10) Check GEAR "DOWN"

11) Turn STROBE "ON"

12) Check LIGHTS are "OFF"

"Good, good! Let's go ahead and switch to Riverside Ground Control frequency, 121.7, and get our clearance to taxi out of here."

13) Tune COM to "121.7" (Ground)

You:

"RIVERSIDE GROUND, THIS IS CESSNA 13MIKE AT THE TERMINAL, READY TO TAXI TO RUNWAY 9 WITH INFORMATION DELTA."

Riverside Ground:

"13MIKE, TAXI TO RUNWAY 9."

TAXI -

"Runway 9 is to our left, so taxi straight ahead to the touch down area for runway 9. When we get to the beginning of runway 9, turn left to face the runway, but hold short of the runway. We will do our runup here." See Figure 1.1

RUNUP -

"Outstanding job! Now before we takeoff, let's make sure that our engine is operating as it should, by checking its magnetos and finishing off with the pretake-off checklist. "

1) Set brake (hold down to prevent aircraft from moving)

2) Advance power to about "1700" RPM

**       3) Select CARB HEAT "ON", record RPM drop_____(5 pts)

4) Select CARB HEAT "OFF"

**       5) Select "LEFT" Mag, record RPM drop_________(5 pts)

6) Select "BOTH" Mags

**       7) Select "RIGHT" Mag, record RPM drop_________(5 pts)

8) Select "BOTH" Mags

9) Reduce power to idle

10) Set FLAPS to first notch (10 degree takeoff configuration)

"Well, there are only two things left to do! Activate your VFR flight plan with Riverside Ground and then change over to Riverside Tower's frequency to get our clearance for takeoff. Go ahead!"

You:

"RIVERSIDE GROUND, 13MIKE WOULD LIKE TO ACTIVATE ITS VFR FLIGHT PLAN TO LA VERNE."

Riverside Ground:

"13MIKE, YOUR VFR FLIGHT PLAN IS ACTIVATED AT THIS TIME."

You:

"13MIKE."

11) Tune COM to "121.0" (Tower)

You:

"RIVERSIDE TOWER, CESSNA 13MIKE, READY FOR TAKEOFF RUNWAY 9."

Riverside Tower:

"13MIKE, YOU ARE CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF."

You:

"13MIKE CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF."
