Flights of 13MIKE

by Fred J. Calfior and Douglas W. Miller

   Flight Scenario Seven

Bloomington-Normal to Kankakee

(Chicago Area - estimated flying time 50 minutes)

Wind! Wind! Wind! It's no wonder they call Chicago the Windy City! I don't believe I've seen an airplane cover as much ground sideways as yours did in the last flight. Well, tell Professor Calfior that Professor Miller said if he is not tired of flying sideways with you, then you can skip the "SETUP" section and proceed to the "PREFLIGHT" section as you continue on to Kankakee. If this is your first flight with "13MIKE", let me tell you how we do the setup. I will lead you through the initial setup phase of the flight simulator where you will set the aircraft type, winds, and position. I will show you how to save this setup so you may return to the Bloomington-Normal Airport without going through the initial setup steps. I will then turn you over to Professor Calfior who will take you through the PREFLIGHT of "13MIKE" to set your instruments, TAXI, and perform a RUN UP of the engine prior to takeoff. He will instruct you in the TAKEOFF, CLIMB OUT, LEVEL OFF, COURSE CHANGES, DESCENT, APPROACH, and LANDING procedures that make up the bulk of this scenario. Please listen to what Professor Calfior has to say about flying techniques. He is trying to help you obtain the best possible score.

FLIGHT PLAN -

This route of flight follows well established departure, climb, cruise, descent, and landing procedures. The procedures begin with a departure from runway 3 at Bloomington-Normal Airport with a climb out to 3500 feet. You will perform a right 45 degree upwind leg departure. You will go 10 nautical miles outside of the airport, and then proceed direct to the ROBERTS VOR. Upon crossing ROBERTS, proceed outbound on a magnetic course of 024, and overfly the Greater Kankakee Airport. Proceed outbound on a heading of 085 for 2 minutes, execute a course reversal, and continue inbound to a right 45 degree traffic pattern entry to land on runway 4. After filling out our flight plan in Appendix A, and calling the Flight Service Station (FSS) to file it, we need to turn to Appendix B and locate the sectional map for Chicago. Find Bloomington-Normal and Kankakee airports. Draw the above route on the map. Now answer these questions.

**  a) How many Victor Airways converge at Roberts VOR?

**  c) What is the name of the private airstrip, on the right, halfway between

Roberts and Kankakee? _________________________(15 pts)
